8 Tips for a Healthy Life Balance
A consequence of working hard is making sacrifices. My mother, a single parent, sacrificed so much of her own time to ensure I grew up happy, and worked hard to move us from Poland to Canada so that I could experience more opportunity. I’m not sure how she did it all, but it’s because of her that I’m here now.
I think many can relate to my experience, and to the experience of my mother’s, as we work hard everyday to juggle our responsibilities and priorities.
So, how do we slow down, prioritize our commitments, and plan our time effectively?
I invited my friends and clients, Marta and Damian and their two little boys, couple Rajesh and Sean, and single parent Leonard, to discuss how they manage their busy lives. To know how they balance their work and personal lives, and learn some of their own tips, watch our full video.
In this latest episode, I’ll show you eight tips to creating a better balance between work and home.
Tip 1: Do what you love.
What makes you happy? Whether it’s going to the gym or taking an art class, find what you’re passionate about and just do it.
Tip 2: Don’t say “yes” to everything or everybody.
Now, this is a really important one. We tend to want to tell people “yes,” but if we say “yes” to everything, then that means saying “no” to ourselves. It’s important to learn to say “no,” because it helps us become better stewards of our time. When you say “no” sometimes, you’re creating time for you.
Tip 3: Prioritize your time.
Think about all of the items on our to-do list, and then determine what’s really important, what’s urgent, and what needs your time now. By prioritizing your to-do list, you can become more time efficient.
Tip 4: Plan some personal time.
Don’t just talk about it! Plot out time for yourself in your calendar, and work other responsibilities around the time you saved for yourself.
Tip 5: Find time for finances.
By dedicating time to your budget, you can know where your money is going and when you can save.
Tip 6: Exercise!
This is a must-do. You can find time to exercise throughout your day without it taking big blocks of time — you can take the stairs instead of the elevator, bike to work instead of riding the bus. If you find an activity you like doing, like hiking or yoga, you’ll be more likely to make time for it.
Tip 7: Take time to make time.
There are plenty of tools out there to help you schedule your time, and when you take time to organize your schedule, it helps save you time in the long-run.
Tip 8: Take vacations!
It’s important to take breaks from your work, even if you love what you do. Vacations help us refresh, so when we do get back to work, we’re energized and motivated for what’s ahead.
